Osteoarthritis is a recurring disease caused by the deterioration of joint cartilages. It is actually the most common form of arthritis. The deterioration is mainly due to the years of wear and tear of the joints where the body’s ability to form new bone margins between bone connections and cartilages have significantly decreased. Osteoarthritis is common in the phalanges and other joints found in the knees and hips.

As a common joint disease, osteoarthritis is widespread for both males and females. Typically, this disease starts to appear at the age of 40 and may get worse as one gets older. In a number of cases, osteoarthritis can cause serious handicap to people as it can decrease the dexterity of the fingers or toes and the mobility of hips, knees and elbows; in fact, osteoarthritis is second only to heart ailments when it comes to work-related disabilities.

Symptoms of osteoarthritis include deep pain in the joints especially after heavy exercise or excessive movement. However, the pain can subside after ample rest. If you suffer from osteoarthritis, you may also experience stiffness in the joints during the morning and after doing heavy exercise. And hearing or feeling that your joints are grating as you move can be considered normal if you have osteoarthritis.

The bad news about osteoarthritis is that it could be permanent as there is no known cure for it. However, there are many ways to relieve its symptoms. Medical attention pertaining to this disease is focused on soothing the pain that accompanies it. As of the moment, the most effective approach to relieving the osteoarthritis pain is to take oral pain pills. Some topical creams are also used to help alleviate pain.

Then, if ordinary analgesic and topical creams are not enough, anti-inflammatory drugs without steroidal derivatives can also be used. For extreme cases, injections with non-sulfated form of polysaccharides, a type of complex carbohydrates, can help in lubricating connective tissues like your aging joints. A process called visco-supplementation together with other surgical treatments, have increasingly become popular especially for osteoarthritis in the knees. But remember, all these measures just deal with the pain and in no way can these cures improve the principal disease which is osteoarthritis.

Instead of totally depending on synthetic medication, osteoarthritis sufferers must also aim to lose weight and do regular exercises. Weight can be a major factor in the overall wear and tear of joints, while adequate exercise can improve the strength of most connective tissues. As for your exercise, you can also add yoga movements. The twists and turns that are characteristic of yoga are proven to build flexibility and strength to connective tissues, plus they can also put a stop to stiffness in your muscles and joints.

Other pain solutions include alternative approaches. Foremost among the alternative means of relieving osteoarthritis pain is acupuncture. In acupuncture, small needles are inserted into certain points of the body. When these points are stimulated, the flow of energy in the body becomes more efficient, thereby releasing substances like serotonin and endorphins which can soothe osteoarthritis pain among other things.

Finally, don’t forget traditional hot and cold compress. Rotating hot pads and ice packs on your aching joints can also provide some remedy for osteoarthritis pain. This is similar to the way athletes take care of their injuries sustained in a match or training session. Although the effects can be short-lived, hot and cold compress sure beats grinding your teeth in pain.

If you are suffering from osteoarthritis, you should consult with your doctor.

Osteoarthritis treatment – Part 2

An Alternative View

OSTEOARTHRITIS we are informed by the medics is an inability by the body to produce new cartilage with resulting pain and inflamation. Osteoarthritis is not to be confused with rheumatoid arthritis, which evidently is a much more serious disease and can affect very young people.

Cartilage, largely made of collagen, is the connective tissue commonly found in the area of articulating bones such as hips, knees, finger joints and of course the vertibrae.. It forms around the bones in the joint areas and provides a smooth cushioned surface enabling us to move with ease.

New cartilage is produced more slowly as people age. Interestingly we also know that as people age they lose collagen and this results in sagging skin, loss of facial tone and generally looking older. A point worth mentioning is that coincidentally human growth hormone production also slows down dramatically as we age and in many people stops altogether by the age of 65. Now these facts may or may not have any connection. Nevertheless I was intrigued and consequently decided to undertake an experiment on myself.

Not being as young as I once was and beginning to experience some pain and inflexibility in one or two of my finger joints I came to the conclusion that this may be the onset of osteoarthritis and started taking an interest in the subject. Some years ago I had two accidents both involving my left ankle leaving it badly sprained and very swollen. It took about six months to heal to the point where I no longer thought about it. Admittedly this is not the most often cited joint to be stricken, the most common being fingers, knees, hips and toes, but apparently any part of the body involving a joint can be affected. As I had sustained no injury recently, nor experienced any discomfort in this ankle for many years I assumed that the pain which came out of the blue and restricted my walking must be some sort of relative to arthritis.

Most of the scientific and medical literature seems to emphasize that this is a natural event to be expected as we age and offer no encouragement as to cures. In fact most articles state categorically that there is no cure and only offer suggestions for exercise and the best way to alleviate pain. Depressing statistics indicate that half the population of the world will experience some thinning of cartilage by the age of 40 leading to osteoarthritis as they grow older.

I was therefore very interested to learn

What is Rheumatism?

12/10/09 - World Arthritis Day

Rheumatism is a broad medical terminology that is used to describe various painful conditions, particularly those that affect the joints, bones, tendons and muscles. Rheumatism can also involve internal organs like the heart, skin, kidneys and lungs. One should note that the word rheumatism does not refer to a single disease or condition. There are over 100 ailments commonly referred to as rheumatism, but the word is something of a modern day anachronism, particularly to the medical establishment.

However, the term “rheumatism” is still used in colloquial speech. Even so, it would be disingenuous to ascribe rheumatism to any one condition. The general terms arthritis and rheumatism between them cover at least 200 different conditions.

What are the symptoms of Rheumatism?

Because the term rheumatism can be applied to a variety of conditions and ailments, it would be extremely difficult to cover the entire range of symptoms. There is however, one thing all rheumatism type conditions share with one another, and that is chronic, often times debilitating pain. Other common symptoms associated with rheumatism include pain, intense soreness, swelling, stiffness in the affected area, and a loss of function in the joints. In addition, people with the disease may have fatigue, occasional fever, and a general sense of not feeling well. The pain associated with this syndrome is very difficult to treat.

What causes Rheumatism?

Causes for rheumatism will vary with the type of condition that is being attributed to the disease, For example, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an auto-immune disease where the antibodies, which normally attack germs to prevent infection, attack the bodys own tissues. With other ailments and diseases, Rheumatism can be caused by damage or wear and tear to joints, bone, cartilage or organs. For instance, Osteoarthritis affects the smooth, shiny cartilage that covers the end of the bones where they come into contact, making it a rheumatic ailment. Other factors to look out for in regards to rheumatism are, heredity, tooth infections, hormonal imbalances, toxicity of the blood and inflamed tonsils.

Rheumatism may affect any and all of us at some time or another, however, only a small minority will develop a form of rheumatism that is severe enough to be crippling.

Will Painwave X4000 Help with Rheumatism?

Since the Painwave X4000 is a non-invasive, drug-free method that gives real pain relief then it would be safe to say that, yes, it can provide amazing results for people who suffer from rheumatism. Unlike TENS or other similar methods of pain relief, it does not block pain signals to the brain, rather, the Painwave X 4000 works in concert with the bodys own bioelectromagnetic ecosystem. Another bonus is that the Painwave X4000 has no side effects, and the unit is simply moved gently over the surface of the skin in a small circular motion. After a short period of time Painwave X4000 will improve cell activity and lymphatic movements and blood circulation, all of which are beneficial in the relief of pain and other discomforts. In many cases, this stimulation will greatly reduce or eliminate pain for good.

Note: The information in this article should not be used to diagnose a disease. If you are experiencing rheumatism like symptoms, seek the attention of a medical professional for a related exam.

What is arthritis?

An inflammation of a body joint or its component tissues, accompanied by pain, soreness, and inflexibility in that area, which is basically a result of causes ranging from infection, distress, degenerative changes or metabolic disorders.

In simple words, affected joints are unable to move smoothly past one another.

In medical parlance, arthritis refers to a collection of more than 100 rheumatic diseases and conditions that can cause pain, stiffness and soreness in the joints. If left untreated, arthritis can cause irreversible damage to the joints.

What are the various forms of arthritis?

Arthritis can appear suddenly or gradually, and occurs in various forms, but osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the two most common.

There are four basic types of arthritis:

1. Inflammatory arthritis - inflammation of tissues related to joints. Connective tissue diseases, crystal deposition diseases, infectious arthritis, and spondylitis are examples of inflammatory arthritis. Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common variety. Other types are Ankylosing spondylitis, Reiter’s syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

2. Degenerative joint disease (osteoarthritis) - corrosion of the cartilage lining the joints and lessening of new bone formation underneath the cartilage. The disease is quite common in the latter part of life where the continued slow damage causes increasing disability.

3. Nonarticular rheumatism - sometimes called soft-tissue rheumatism, and includes conditions like tendonitis, bursitis, fibrositis. This condition is related to sleep disturbances or even muscular abnormalities.

4. Other diseases may also give rise to arthritis. There exist neurological, blood and endocrine related disorders giving rise to rheumatic diseases.

How to recognize arthritis?

Symptoms differ from person to person depending on his age, the affected area and the type of arthritis. The most common symptoms include:

Swelling in one or more joints

Stiffness around the joint that usually occurs in the early morning

Constant or recurring pain in a joint

Tenderness around a joint

Difficulty using or moving a joint normally

Redness in a joint accompanied by heat there

Other possible symptoms:

Occasional fever

Weight loss and fatigue

Breathing difficulty

Rashes and itching

Who all are at risk of arthritis?

Younger people have a relatively lower risk of having arthritis but still comprise a sizeable portion of affected people.

Prevalence is generally higher among women as compared to men, especially osteoarthritis. Arthritis is the leading cause of mobility limitation in women aged 45 years and above. So all you ladies, remember prevention is better than cure.

What are the common causes?

The causes of arthritis usually depend on the type of arthritis. Common causes include:

injury (leading to osteoarthritis),

irregular metabolism

hereditary

some infection

unknown reasons in case of rheumatoid arthritis

What treatment procedure to follow?

Early diagnosis and treatment helps

The most common complication of arthritis is functional disability. However, do not get scared! General health upkeep, rest, and gradual treatment can avoid this situation.

There is no complete remedial treatment, only control through a combination of heat fomentation, massage, and supervised exercise. The various treatment options help manage pain and reduce deformity and disability.

A correct diagnosis of the type of arthritis is important before undergoing any drug therapy. Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis can be treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Do not be your own doctor. Remember, all medications can have side effects, so the dosage and duration of treatment should essentially be under trained medical supervision. Surgical treatment includes arthroscopic surgery and joint replacement.

Tips to control and prevent the condition:

Weight reduction accompanied by regular physical activity: Keep your weight under control, as it reduces the risk of getting arthritis, especially osteoarthritis.

Strengthen the muscles: through regular exercise especially weight bearing exercise. It helps maintain physical mobility and slows the development of disability.

Prevent stress on a particular joint as well as injuries: Repetitive stress or injuries on any joint increases the risk of osteoarthritis.

What kind of diet regime need to be followed to take care of this condition:

Nutrition is an important aspect in the treatment of arthritis.

For a person suffering from arthritis, his diet should be rich in fruits and vegetables (flavonoid rich foods), especially those that are rich sources of anti-oxidants so as to protect against cellular and joint damage.

Try and avoid all processed foods, complex carbohydrates, including sugar and fruit juices. Increase intake of high fibre foods. Limit fat intake to a minimum.

An important aspect in reducing arthritis pain is elimination of any type of food sensitivity. Get a test for food sensitivity because there may be allergies involved.

Food supplements may be introduced. Anti-oxidants help prevent damage to the cartilage of the bone. Vitamin E slows down the breakdown of cartilage as well as stimulates the manufacture of cartilage components. Vitamin C is necessary for the manufacture of collagen, the major support protein of cartilage.

How does physical therapy help?

Physical therapy is very important in reestablishing joint harmony. Various physical therapy treatments include exercise, heat, cold, and diathermy(heat treatment using electricity); and are beneficial in increasing joint mobility and decreasing pain. Avoid physical activities that excessively put strain on the joints.

Some natural treatment options:

No medicine or drug can completely cure arthritis or slow its progression without causing side effects. But, you can help repair your joints as well as slow degeneration with natural treatment therapies.

Natural Solution: Arthcare Oil – An Anti-inflammatory Herbal massage oil.

Arthcare is anti-inflammatory herbal oil, which not only gives a relief from joint pains but also strengthens the bone tissues, the skeletal and the neuromuscular systems, giving comfortable movements of joints and muscles. http://www.ayurvediccure.com/arthcareoil.htm

Massage with the yellow wonder herb turmeric. No question of any side effects, plus turmeric also acts as an anti-oxidant to help protect joints.

Ginger, an ayurveda herb, if consumed in small amounts on a regular basis can reduce symptoms and occurrence of rheumatoid arthritis.

Aromatherapy technique involves the use of extracted oil from flowers, plants and trees in combination with massage and steam inhalation – helps relaxation, pain relief.

Yoga involves a combination of breathing exercises and relaxation to help in blood circulation and movement of joints.

Osteopathy includes the manipulation of the body to restore normal action and decrease pain. It is not recommended for those suffering from osteoporosis.

Reflexology involves rubbing the feet and the palm of the hand to help progress the state of rest of the body, and also generate a warm sensation. This is an ideal method for stress management and overall health continuance; factors that cause arthritis.

So, come on get moving, and do not allow this ageless epidemic disease become a debilitating factor in your daily life.

Hot Tub Arthritis Pain Relief

MerynTablet

Hot tubs have been around for centuries for relaxation as well as for medicinal purposes.

If you have back pain, a tub can help you relieve the aches and pains you feel by loosening the muscles and massaging them.

Hot tubs are great tools to use for a variety of medical conditions.

If you have back pain, this is especially true because the hot water will provide a soothing area to stretch and will also massage and loosen the muscles to help you be more flexible and pain free.

Physicians are even recognizing the benefits and are starting to recommend using a hot tub for people with chronic back pain…

Hot tub Hydrotherapy:Before starting any exercise program or spa therapy, first check with your doctor.

Depending on your situation, your physician may have certain exercises to do or a regular regimen that may differ from others based on your individual needs.

The doctor may also recommend the twice daily hot tub sessions be a certain temperature and duration to ensure maximum relief.

The first thing in the morning, a soak in the hot tub and some water exercise provides a safe and pleasant way to warm up the joints and increase freedom of movement.

It also loosens up tight muscles from the previous evening’s rest. A maximum of a half hour in the spa is usually sufficient to get the needed exercises in and loosen up the joints.

At the end of the day, when, as the body cools down, stiffness and pain may again set in. The end of the evening is ideal for another half hour session in the hot tub.

Instead of exercises, though, relaxation and use of the hot tub’s jets to passively massage the muscles ease the body and mind.

Hot Tub Hydromassage:Hydromassage uses the jets of the hot tub or spa to passively buffet aching muscles. If arthritis is in the joints, how is this beneficial?

Even though the origin of the pain is within the joints themselves, the muscles attached to those bones and moving those joints often set up in spasm.

Though not as pronounced as the “charlie horse” some get at night in the calf muscle, nevertheless, the stiff spasm may cause significant pain to be felt in the joint.

Heat and the gentle massage action of the jets in the short session in the hot tub relax the spasming, stiff muscles.

As those muscles relax, pressure on the joint is reduced relieving the pain within the elbow, hip, knee or other joints.

Massage therapists agree that 90% of most all pain, though originating elsewhere, is actually perceived in the muscles’ response.

Once the muscles are relieved of spasm, gentle water exercise while still in the tub proves beneficial. The water’s buoyancy itself provides a low impact arena in which to exercise.

Blood vessels expand, increasing circulation, and removing toxins that have built up causing soreness in the muscles.

This combination of heat, gentle massage and low impact exercises in the hot tub allows the arthritis sufferer to move more freely and with less pain. It improves the remainder of the day or brings ease for the remainder of the night.

Arthritis pain relief and not cure is what is available when it comes to taking care of this unbearable disease. Occasional liberation from this ailment is accessible. The longer you can stay pain free, obviously the better off you will be.

The fingers, knees, hips, and spine are the areas of the body that osteoarthritis commonly disturbs. The wrists, elbows, shoulders, and ankles are additional locations in the body also affected. Joints with a record of injury or unusual stress are much more prone to developing osteoarthritis than other joints. That is why so many athletes have arthritis in their knees because of the constant pressure applied to that leg joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis, one of the more common types, occurs when synovial membrane gets inflamed and joints swells up. If it is allowed to increase it can affect the cartilage and cause severe pain. In its more advances stage it can affect other parts of the body such as lungs, heart and eyes. This disease is three times more common in women than in men.

Psoriatic Arthritis is not as familiar as the previous two. This type eats away at the joints and can also manifest as psoriasis on the skin. An arthritis pain relief for this type would help.

Alternative arthritis pain relief solutions are being sought out by patients. For a variety of reasons such as:

The arthritis pain relief that once worked is not maintaining a consistent degree of protection any longer.

Moving away from chemical healing to some natural arthritis pain relief is much more appealing

Many times money is the motivating force. Patients will continue to look for lesser expensive arthritis pain relief solutions.

Patients are more and more concerned with side effects caused by some medications and are looking for an arthritis pain relief that is natural to ease their fears.

Rising above the pain
You must continually focus on what you can do, rather than what you cannot do. Devise strategies and set goals in order to continue living your life to the fullest potential. You must focus on remaining active and maintaining as much independence as possible.

Some useful solutions
By using fatty acids which provide lubrication for the joints, the joints will not wear down as much as a result less inflammation and less pain. Some recommend oils are: – Borage Oil – Primrose Oil and – NKO Oil

Vitamin C, E and beta-carotenes are powerful antioxidants that help to neutralize free radicals. These oxygen-reactive free radical molecules are thought to contribute significantly to disease and tissue damage. It has been found that cells from damaged knee cartilage can release great amounts of free radicals. In fact, studies have shown that those who have a high Vitamin C intake have a two-thirds reduction in the risk of further damage to their knees. Well-known scientist Dr. Linus Pauling recommends 18 grams of V-C per day as an arthritis preventative measure.

Selenium deficiency can cause a particular type of arthritis called Kashin-Bek disease, but it is more common where the soil is deficient in selenium, though sufferers of RA have less in their blood than others. Fish, organ meats, whole grains, nuts and beans will provide selenium.

Zinc may help reduce pain, stiffness and swelling. Some trials showed this was true, though others gave conflicting results. Oysters, cheese and tofu are all good sources of zinc.

Save Your Money – Cheap Natural Arthritis Pain Relief Tips And Treatments

All beads from cheapboutique!

I found relief from my arthritis pain, naturally, and you can do it too. During my nursing career I was never able to find relief for my arthritis pain until I turned to the field considered natural or alternative medicine.

The first step when looking for solutions to an arthritis pain problem is to understand how arthritis works. As a result of arthritis, the bone beneath the cartilage undergoes changes that lead to bony overgrowth and the tissue that lines the joint can become inflamed, the ligaments can loosen, and the associated muscles can weaken. To get the arthritis pain relief you’re seeking it’s helpful to understand how arthritis works.

The synovial fluid lubricates and provides oxygen and nutrients to the cartilage, which has no blood supply. Cartilage contains chondrocytes, water, proteoglycans and collagen; chondrocytes are the basic cartilage cells and are necessary for balance and function. The joints are designed to provide flexibility, support, stability, and protection.

An inflammatory response causes cytokines, to gather in injured areas and cause inflammation and damage to body tissue and cells; it’s known to play a role in rheumatoid arthritis and other muscle and joint problems associated with autoimmune diseases. It’s generally thought that inflammation plays a minor role in osteoarthritis and is more likely to be a result, not a cause, of arthritis.

Possible causes of arthritis include lesser known: bleeding disorders, like hemophilia, that causes bleeding to occur in the joint; disorders such as avascular necrosis, that block the blood supply closest to the joint; and conditions like hemochromatosis, that causes iron build-up in the joints.

For snacks, choose raw nuts without salt instead of lifeless roasted nuts. Natural treatment for arthritis is usually a better choice because it’s non-invasive to the body. With natural treatments there will be fewer, if any, side effects or adverse reactions.

Gluten may be a culprit in arthritic diseases including fibromyalgia; avoid wheat, barley, rye, spelt, triticale, kamut and oats (although not a gluten grain it gets contaminated at the wheat mills). Nutrition experts say it takes a combination of supplements, that no one supplement can relieve arthritis pain, build cartilage, etc.

Make smoothies with fruit only using a base of two bananas, adding a cup of frozen or fresh blueberries and mango chunks or substitute any other fruit and add an energy boost of two tablespoons of coconut oil; add one or two leaves of kale for another highly nutritional boost — no one will ever know.

Many have told me that going off dairy products and gluten containing foods relieved their arthritis pain entirely. Studies done on antioxidant vitamins question the value of these supplements; it’s clearly better to consume these antioxidants in living foods because they may also need to work with other nutrients present in the foods to work properly.

Make highly nutritious raw applesauce using a food processor and put in 3-4 cored pesticide-free apples, with the skin on, and mix for a minute; so much better for you than canned highly processed applesauce and add 1/4 tsp. cinnamon or two tablespoons of freshly ground flaxseed for another boost. Try massaging your fingers or other affected joints with coconut oil twice a day.

Exercise in a heated pool; it will help reduce the pressure on your joints and the heat will help you loosen those joints. There are a number of exercises which can benefit arthritis sufferers regardless of how much restriction of movement there is. Exercise is good for joints affected by osteoarthritis. Fight arthritis through proper exercise!

Try to keep painful joint areas in motion, even in a limited manner. For arthritic fingers, a good exercise is to put your finger tips together and press hard and release, then repeat several times. Don’t just sit there, keep moving.

If you’re planning to take any of the non-prescription NSAIDS for arthritis, make sure you understand what bad effects they can have on the stomach, liver and/or kidneys and discuss this with your doctor. Once you become more informed about arthritis you’ll be able to plan an arthritis treatment program, natural or conventional or a combination of both. Be aware that the use of NSAIDs or Cox-2 inhibitors do not halt the progress of osteoarthritis and may even hasten the onset.

Once you understand the facts about arthritis, possible causes and treatment approaches you can take, you’ll be on your way to recovery and pain will disappear. More and more doctors are investigating the benefits of alternative therapies and most don’t object to patients trying them. Knowing more about arthritis and how it works will ultimately help contribute to your relief of arthritis pain.

Tramadol and Osteoarthritis

HSS: dedicated to finding the causes and cures of disease

One of many causes of invalidity today is caused by a disease called osteoarthritis. Being a chronic degenerative illness, osteoarthritis affects the cartilage of the joints and it has been reported to appear in middle-aged persons. Unfortunately, no curative treatment has been found for osteoarthritis even though scientists maintain their hope. At the moment, the only treatment that can be recommended for osteoarthritis is symptomatic, medication like Tramadol having a positive effect on pain and various other upsetting symptoms described by patients.

After multiple studies, it has been found that the opioid analgesic decreases the pain effectively but also reduces general rigidity and promotes the relaxation of muscles. Patients who have taken the recommended dosage of Tramadol have declared that they were able to function better and that they felt an improvement in their condition. Still, the side-effects were present and among them there were certain symptoms that were more specific. It seems that nausea and vomiting dominate the top, while being followed by vertigo, weakness, sleepiness, and recurring headaches.

Patients have been warned that they should not take excessive doses of Tramadol hoping that it will cure their disease. The small benefits of Tramadol are indeed a big plus for such patients but increased dosage related to serious side effects, which in the end might even represent a cause for them to stop the treatment. Being one of the most encountered forms of inflammatory joint disease, osteoarthritis affects all the major articulations in the body, causing extreme pains but also swelling in the cartilage that is thinning with every day that passes. Doctors recommend pain relievers such as opioids (including Tramadol) moderate to intense pains but they also give NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) to stop or reduce the swelling.

While acetaminophen might be beneficial on pain and swelling at the same time, it is important to acknowledge the risk for gastrointestinal bleeding and present it to the patient. Latest studies have also shown that NSAID medication can lead to renal problems, another reason why such drugs should not be administered with great ease and in any condition. Tramadol, having an opiate-like structure does not cause gastrointestinal bleeding, nor does it cause renal problems, except when the patient already suffers from renal failure.

For osteoarthritis, Tramadol is indeed a suitable medication given the fact that is decreases both the intensity and appearance of pain, relieving the body of such upsetting symptoms and also improving the general functioning of the organism. The dosage usually starts at 50 mg/day and is raised in the following days until a comfortable level is reached. Consulting with the doctor, patients are informed about potential side-effects and the reversibility of such reactions. These reactions are rarely life-threatening, except when the patient overdoses and patients must be carefully instructed not to exceed the dosage on their own account.

Even though the dosage of Tramadol for elderly patients is reduced, it has been found that Tramadol is quite effective when it comes to treating chronic pain caused by medical conditions such as osteoarthritis. Unlike other medication, Tramadol is indicated as it does not have a negative effect on high blood pressure and cardiac insufficiency, having at the same time a reduced risk for producing stomach ulcer (reasons mentioned above). The low potential for respiratory depression is a definite advantage versus other narcotic medication.

Recent data has shown that Tramadol extended-release tablets are much more efficient for treating the pain in osteoarthritis. Journals of rheumatology are promoting Tramadol as ongoing treatment for pain appeared in such contexts but they also demonstrate the efficiency of this medication in other situations. Patients with cancer pain, low back pain and trauma-caused injuries can very well benefit from this treatment, as long as they take Tramadol as indicated and report to the doctor if any of the known side-effects are present. Clinical evidence has given reason that in the future Tramadol could be used for other musculo-skeletal disorders, providing patients with a treatment that is efficient but does not cause the same level of dependence as other opioid drugs.

Osteoarthritis – Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Folks can now

Also called: Degenerative joint disease, OA, Osteoarthrosis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. It causes pain, swelling and reduced motion in your joints. It can occur in any joint, but usually it affects your hands, knees, hips or spine.

Causes of Osteoarthritis

Although it commonly arises from trauma, osteoarthritis often affects multiple members of the same family, suggesting that there is hereditary susceptibility to this condition. A number of studies have shown that there is a greater prevalence of the disease between siblings and especially identical twins, indicating a hereditary basis[citation needed]. Up to 60% of OA cases are thought to result from genetic factors.

Age

Osteoarthritis usually starts in the late 40s, 50s or 60s and is uncommon before the age of 40. We do not fully understand why it is more common in older people. It is probably due to several factors that accompany growing older muscles become weaker, we put on weight, and our body is less able to heal itself.

Injury to a joint or repeated overuse of it can also damage the cartilage and lead to osteoarthritis.

Other types of arthritis can also damage joints and lead to osteoarthritis.

What are symptoms of osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis is a disease of the joints. Unlike many other forms of arthritis that are systemic illnesses, such as rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus, osteoarthritis does not affect other organs of the body. The most common symptom of osteoarthritis is pain in the affected joint(s) after repetitive use. Joint pain is usually worse later in the day.

Tenderness in the joint when you apply light pressure

Stiffness in a joint, that may be most noticeable when you wake up in the morning or after a period of inactivity

Hip: The hips are major weight-bearing joints. Involvement of the hips may be seen more in men. Farmers, construction workers, and firefighters have been found to have an increased incidence of hip osteoarthritis. Researchers think that a heavy physical workload contributes to OA of the hip and knee.

Diagnosis of Osteoarthritis

X-ray

In order to confirm which type of arthritis you have you may need to have an X-ray of your affected joints. An X-ray uses high energy radiation to produce an image of the inside of your body. It can also show how advanced your condition is.

Treatment of Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis cannot be cured, but it can be treated. Beginning treatment as early as possible can help reduce long-term damage to your joints and bones. The goal of every treatment for arthritis is to reduce pain and stiffness, allow for greater movement, and slow the progression of the disease. Newer and more effective treatments for osteoarthritis continue to be developed.

Arthroscopy

Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure that uses small incisions and miniature instruments. A tiny telescope, called an arthroscope, is inserted into the joint space, which is then filled with fluids so the surgeon can clearly see the components of the joint. This enables the surgeon to look directly at the bone surfaces and determine how advanced your arthritis is.

Oral Enzymes. People in Europe have used natural enzymes — including bromelain, trypsin, papain, and rutin — to treat arthritic pain. Such enzymes have been marketed alone and in combinations (Wobenzym, Phlogenzym). They are not painkillers, and any benefits derived from them may take several weeks.
