Natural Arthritis Treatments And Important Prevention

Never the less the disease arthritis is a complete hazardous and exertion of the body. In fact, the survey indicates the people do suffer a lot from arthritis especially who are working and use basic organ or body part to get their work done. People generally loose the mobility of the certain limbs and become idle by the excessive infestation of this particular disease.

In US at least one individual out there has become the victim of the arthritis as per the statistics goes. Arthritis is not a single disease the medical community looks at, it is combination of 100 separate segments of chronic stretching of joint pain and back pain symptoms.

The two common form of the arthritis that can affect people at any stage of life are Osteoarthritis and Rheumatoid. These two forms consist of various causes and the risk factors, yet they do share some common symptoms- persistent joint pain, hip pain, wrist pain and back pain. Today there is more luck with medical research and joint. Natural arthritis treatments are becoming more studies and popping up everywhere.

Osteoarthritis is the most common arthritis found in United States. Approximately 21 million people suffer from this disease. This disease largely affects the joint cartilage and leads to joint bone tendon, stiffness by breaking down of the cartilage. When to search the main cause of the Osteoarthritis, we become deprived to aware the actual cause. But the deep scientific research states the joint pain begin in response to physical stress (mainly for the continual movement of the limb).

The stress deteriorates the cartilage that encases the end pat of the bones firm and provide with the cushion for the bones to help the bones to move and work smoothly and comprehensively. As the Osteoarthritis causes the break down to the cartilage, it allows the bone to thicken the end and if it goes on the bones rub each other and pops out pain. The secretion of some certain substance named as prostaglandins from the joint tissues causes the swelling and stress. Typical back pain is mainly derived from this type of arthritis. As new natural arthritis healing products are becoming developed, joint pain and reducing stress and swelling is the common goal.

Rheumatoid Arthritis is chronic system inflammatory disease of undetermined etiology involving the articular structures of the multiple joints. The disease is often progressive and results in pain, stiffness, and swelling of joints. In late stages deformity and ankylosis develop. The cause of RA is unknown. The diagnosis is based routinely on the persistence of arthritic symptoms over time.

The primary targets of inflammation are synovial membranes and articular structures. Other organs are affected as well. Inflammation, proliferation, and degeneration typify synovial membrane involvement. Joint deformities and disability result from the erosion and destruction of synovial membranes and articular surfaces.

Though the anatomical changes are very difficult to be reversed but their have been certain natural preparations that are extremely helpful in suppressing pain and prevent any further damage to the joint. Few natural herbs are very effective in curbing and cure arthritis. Now scientists are single goal orientated in solvingarthritis pain treatment.

Hip Arthritis – Pain Relief

Lavender Lavender Lavender!!

Hip arthritis is without doubt one of the most common forms of arthritis- which can have many different causes. There is one factor in common however- this is loss of cartilage from the hip joint. The loss of cartilage results in the hip bones grinding unnaturally together, resulting in pain. Hip arthritis advances quite quickly once it sets in, and pain and treatment options vary greatly depending on the patients age, health and lifestyle.

Once hip arthritis has been diagnosed, the doctor will consider both surgical and non-surgical options for treatment. The doctor may recommend combining several treatment methods. Simple non-invasive treatments for hip arthritis include weight loss, anti-inflammatory medication such as Naprosyn and Ibuprofen, and lifestyle changes- such as taking up regular walking. These non-surgical methods assist in reducing the pain, and preventing symptoms re-occurring. Sufferers of hip arthritis should be aware of some claims of the benefits of Nutraceuticals such as Glucosamine supplements in treating hip arthritis. There is no strong evidence that links their effectiveness with hip arthritis and they are not FDA regulated in the US.

In terms of surgical treatment options for hip arthritis there are 2: Osteotomy, wherein the surgeon cuts the bone to re-align the hip joint and Total Hip Arthroplasty (THA), which means total hip joint replacement. The latter is obviously more serious.

THA is the most common form of surgery used to treat hip arthritis. The doctor will need to analyze various factors before deciding that THA is the best treatment for hip arthritis. The beauty of THA is that in time it will allow most patient to regain normal use of their hips, so they can resume the activities which may be so dear to them. Another strong reason for pursuing THA as a viable treatment option for hip arthritis, is the fact that the pain will be eased immeasurably- specifically the pain experienced at night, which is the worst. THA is not necessarily the best treatment option for everyone. Many patients will be able to comfortably modify their lifestyles to reduce the need to pursue the THA procedure.

Many sufferers of hip arthritis are pursuing THA, due to recent medical advancements, and the brilliance of surgeons specifically in the US. Further to this the materials used nowadays in THA are totally durable, meaning they will not break down over time. These recent developments have seen a spike in the number of patients been encouraged to pursue THA as a viable and effective treatment option for hip arthritis.

THA is an extremely effective and safe procedure performed under anesthetic, which greatly lowers the risks of surgery-related complications and allows for a faster recovery- and hence less time off from work. Currently in the US, patients undergoing THA do not remain in hospital for longer than 5 days. Hip joint replacement usually has an extremely high success rate with 85 to 95 percent success rate over a period of 20 years. This is re-assuring for sufferers of hip arthritis, as it provides a swift method of dealing with the pain for the long term.

Arthritis Pain Relief! Weighing Over The Counter Medications And Supplements In The Treatment Of Osteoarthritis

For more information on my designs please see my profile! :D

Chronic arthritis pain isn’t something to ignore: not only can it affect your quality of life, it can also deplete your emotional stores (leading to anxiety and/or depression) and muscle fitness (leading to weakness or complete muscle breakdown).

But whether you suffer from osteoarthritis (“wear and tear” of the joints), rheumatoid arthritis (inflammation in the joints) or gout (excess uric acid that accumulate in the joints), relief from your arthritis pain is available. This article will discuss the pros and cons of over the counter (OTC) medications and supplements for osteoarthritis, focusing on managing arthritis pain and maintaining the ability to use the joint in question.

Arthritis Pain Relief: Acetaminophen

Of the drugs in our list of arthritis pain relievers, acetaminophen is widely accepted as the OTC with the least amount of undesirable side effects and the lowest long-term costs. However, acetaminophen does nothing to reduce inflammation associated with arthritis pain, normally can only treat mild to moderate cases of osteoarthritis and can easily become toxic if mixed with alcohol.

Arthritis Pain Relief: NSAIDs

NSAIDs help sufferers with both arthritis pain and inflammation and are quite inexpensive (like acetaminophen). However, long term usage has been shown to cause upset stomach and other, more serious side effects (such as skin rashes or speeding up the progression of osteoarthritis by interfering with cartilage repair and promoting cartilage destruction).

Arthritis Pain Relief: Glucosamine and Chondroitin Sulfate

Combined together, glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are excellent supplements in the fight against arthritis pain: they are said to increase mobility, reduce osteoarthritis pain and form the building blocks for cartilage growth. However, those allergic to shellfish must avoid glucosamine at all costs (since it’s derived from the shells of shrimp, lobster and crab).

Arthritis Pain Relief: MSM

MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) has been studied extensively (for over twenty years) as an arthritis pain relieving supplement. By blocking pain transmitters in the affected nerve, MSM users find similar arthritis pain relief to acetaminophen, but without the potential liver toxicity. Some osteoarthritis sufferers have also noticed a reduction in inflammation of the joints also, since MSM reduces histamine levels (linked to allergy-related inflammation).

Arthritis Pain Relief: SAMe

SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine) has been shown to reduce inflammation in osteoarthritis sufferers as much as NSAIDs. However, SAMe takes a longer time to see symptom reduction, but offers less gastrointestinal discomfort than NSAIDs in general. Arthritis pain sufferers should ensure enough B vitamins are ingested along with SAMe to feel the full effects, and expect slow but steady arthritis pain relief.

Arthritis Pain Relief: Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA)

Found in evening primrose and borage oils, GLA is an omega-6 fatty acid said to help lessen arthritis pain, stiffness and swelling. Few side effects have been recorded, however all omega-6′s are blood thinners and may increase the risk of bleeding if taken with NSAIDs.

As with all OTC supplements and drugs, check with your doctor first before starting any arthritis pain reducing regimen on your own. You may also want to monitor your liver and kidney function for most of the medications discussed above since almost all have a slight risk of side effects. Start with the lowest dosage possible to see how your body and your illness tolerate the item, and be patient: you’ll never be sure if a new supplement or medication is actually working if you don’t take adequate time to test.

Arthritis treatment guide – Part 1

Arthritis can be defined as the inflammation of a joint or a state characterized by inflammation of joints. Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. This disease is a combination of chronic, painful, disabling conditions affecting synovial joints. Prevalence of the disease is known to increase with age. Because of its prevalence and the frequent disability that accompanies disease in the knee and hip, osteoarthritis accounts for more trouble with climbing stairs and walking than any other disease. Osteoarthritis is the most common reason for total hip and total knee replacement.

Osteoarthritis increases with age, and sex-specific differences also present. Before 50 years of age, the prevalence of osteoarthritis in most joints is higher in men than in women. After about age 50 years, women are more often affected with hand, foot, and knee osteoarthritis than men. In most studies, hip osteoarthritis is more frequent in men. The pathology of osteoarthritis involves the whole joint in a disease process that includes focal and progressive hyaline articular cartilage loss with concomitant changes in the bone underneath the cartilage, including development of marginal outgrowths, osteophytes, and increased thickness of the bony envelope. Soft tissues around the joint are also affected. The disease is also associated with pain that occurs during the usage of the joint along with the structural damage. Main symptoms of the disease are

1. Pain in a joint during or after use, or after a period of inactivity

2. Tenderness in the joint when you apply light pressure

3. Stiffness in a joint, that may be most noticeable when you wake up in the morning or after a period of inactivity

4. Loss of flexibility may make it difficult to use the joint

5. Grating sensation when you use the joint

6. Bone spurs, which appear as hard lumps, may form around the affected joint

7. Swelling in some cases

The disease is classified according to the distribution of joints affected;

1. Osteoarthritis of the hand

2. Osteoarthritis of the hip

3. Osteoarthritis of the knee

The disease is often the product of interplay between systemic and local factors. Genes also play an important role in the development of osteoarthritis. Genetic factors account for at least 50% of cases of osteoarthritis of the hands and hips and a smaller percentage in the knees. Severe joint injury may also be sufficient to cause osteoarthritis. A perosn may have a familial predispoistion

Complementary and Alternative Treatments for Rheumatoid Arthritis

World Arthritis Day 12th October

Aromatherapy

To help reduce inflammation, try drinking ginger-castor oil tea daily at bedtime.

Chiropractic

Although chiropractic cannot do a lot to turn back the clock, it can prevent progression of the disease. Specific chiro practic adjustment (SCA) can help patients with rheumatoid arthritis by increasing joint flexibility, decreasing swelling in the joint areas and joint capsules, and decreasing fluid accumulation that results from arthritic changes. For example, if the patient’s hands are affected, care includes SCA of the affected joints, moist heat application, and hot water soaks with Epsom salts to promote mobility. In some cases, care may include paraffin (hot wax) baths.

Herbal Therapy

Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis have many similarities, including herbal remedies. However, there are some subtle variations. For rheumatoid arthritis, take a combination tincture of meadowsweet, willow bark, black cohosh, prickly ash, celery seed, nettle’ wild yam, and valerian to help temper arthritis symptoms. To make the blend, mix equal amounts of the tinctures; take 1 teaspoonful of the mixture 3 times daily. The blend is safe and can be taken for a period of time. (See also “Osteoarthritis” entry.)

Herbal products are available in health food stores and in some pharmacies and supermarkets. Follow package for specific directions.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture To treat rheumatoid arthritis, which commonly affects the wrists, knees, shoulders, ankles, and elbows-acupuncturists may focus on the heart, kidney, back of head, and internal secretion points. They may also target any points that are associated with the afflicted joint.

To help quell arthritis-related foot pain, the practitioner may manipulate Liver 2, Kidney 3, Bladder 60, Liver 3, Stomach 44, and several points on the ear. Arthritic ankle pain is often treated by inserting needles into Stomach 41, Bladder 60, Gallbladder 40, and additional auricular points.

AcupressureFor rheumatism-related ankle pain, a practitioner will probably target two points: Large Intestine 4 (in the webbing of the hand between the thumb and forefinger) and Bladder 60 (in the depression behind the outside ankle bone). Several points on the foot and on the ankle itself also may be targeted.

Elbow pain may be relieved by massaging LI 11 (toward the outside of the elbow); knee pain will be helped by manipulating several points on and around the knee itself; shoulder pain is best helped by performing acupressure on several points, including Large Intestine 15 and Gallbladder 21; while wrist pain is alleviated by applying pressure to several acupoints on the wrist. In addition, ear acupuncture may be used to help further relieve the symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis.

Generalized joint pain may be relieved by pressing the two Gallbladder 20 points on the back of the neck.

Chinese Herbal TherapyThere are many Chinese herbal arthritis formulas available at health food stores or by mail order, such as Angelica and Loranthes Combination for lower back and knee pain; Xiao Huo Luo Dan for stiff joints; Feng Shih Hsiao Thng Wan for finger, shoulder, knee, and hip pain associated with rheumatism; and Tian Ma Wan for general rheumatic pain.

A Simple Guide To Understanding Osteoarthritis

Linda Leff, R.N., B.C.

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. The word ‘osteoarthritis’ is derived from three Greek words osteo meaning bones, arthr means joints and its means inflammation. Thus, osteoarthritis is an inflammatory condition that results pain in joints and bones. Cartilage is the connective tissue between the bones and is made up of protein that serves as a cushion between the joints of the bones.

Osteoarthritis is caused by breakdown and loss of cartilage of one or more joints.
Osteoarthritis is also called as degenerative arthritis or degenerative joint disease as the cartilage between the bones degenerates causing painful rubbing of bone to bone in joints.
Osteoarthritis may also cause joints to fall out of their natural positions causing misalignment. The most frequently affected joints include hands, spine, knees and hips. It often develops in people who are between the age ranging from 40 years to 60 years.

Osteoarthritis Signs and Symptoms

The indications of osteoarthritis often develop slowly and worsen with time. The following are the common signs and symptoms:-

Pain in joints during or after period of inactivity
Tenderness in joints when you apply light pressure
Stiffness in joints, that is mostly noticeable when waking up in the morning or after a period of inactivity
Loss of flexibility which makes it difficult to use joints
Grating sensation when moving
Bone spurs, which appears as hard lumps formed near the affected joints
Loss of movement
Cracking or creaking of joints
Knobby bone growth
Swelling

Osteoarthritis – Causes

The primary cause of osteoarthritis is aging. With aging, the water content of the cartilage increases and the protein makeup degenerates. Repetitive use of joints over the years irritates and inflames cartilage causing pain and swelling in joints. In due course, cartilage begins to degenerate by cracking and forming tiny narrow openings. In advance cases there are total loss of cartilage, causing friction between the bones, leading to pain and restrictions in movement in joints. In some of the cases, it has been seen that some people are genetically predisposed to acquiring osteoarthritis, but this has not yet be proven.

A summary of the factors that cause
osteoarthritis includes:-

Obesity adds to the stress and strain on the joints
Previous injury in joints
Repetitive surgery of joints
Abnormal joints at the birth
Diseases such as diabetes, gout or hormonal disorders
Large deposits of crystals of calcium pyrophosphate and uric acid
Jobs or activities that involve repetitive movements of particular joint

Osteoarthritis – Diagnosis

Osteoarthritis is usually diagnosed by symptoms and by the physical examination of the patient. The factors such as medical history, history of arthritis in the family, occupation and the activities done by the patient are taken into account.

Generally X-ray analysis is useful for identification of osteoarthritis as it can highlight the narrow space between the bones in joints and bone spur formation. It also shows whether there is any calcium built up in the body tissues which causes hardening.

Occasionally, a Computerized Tomography scan (CT scan) or Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan (MRI scan) is also used to identify osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis – Treatment

Generally following medicines are prescribed for treating osteoarthritis:-

Analgesics such as acetaminophen, they help to relieve pain.
Non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen.
Corticosteroids injected directly into the affected joint.

In severe cases of osteoarthritis, arthroplasty is used to treat patient. Arthroplasty involves reconstruction or replacement of diseased joint. Other possible cases include realignment of joints.

There are number of other therapies that are used to treat Osteoarthritis. The therapies are as follows

Massage
Acupuncture
Osteopathy
Chiropractics
Hydrotherapy
Electrotherapy
Intake of nutritional supplements such as glucosamine sulphate, chondroitin and fish oil

Osteoarthritis – Prevention

The following are some of the preventive steps for osteoarthritis:-

Controlling weight
Taking care that bone injuries do not occur
Proper physical exercise
Maintaining good posture
Avoiding stress.

Arthritis is one of the most chronic joint diseases of the world. The word arthritis is derived from two Greek words – athron, meaning joints; and itis, meaning inflammation.

Thus, arthritis is defined as the inflammation of one or more joints. Any part of the body can become inflamed or painful from arthritis. Some rheumatic conditions can result in weakening, even life-threatening complications or may affect other parts of the body including muscles, bones and internal organs.

Arthritis can affect anyone at any age, including children. Women are more prone as compared to men.

Types of arthritis:

There are more than 100 known types of arthritis. The following are the most commonly occurring types and account for 90 per cent of arthritis cases:

1) Rheumatoid arthritis

2) Osteoarthritis – a degenerative disorder that mainly occurs in women after menopause, but it may occur in young age also.

3) Ankylosing sponndylitis – affects the spine

4) Systemic lupus erythematosus – affects the sun exposed areas of the skin, such as the cheeks; internal organs can also be affected by inflammation.

5) Juvenile arthritis

6) Fibromyalgia – sleep dysfunction and irritable bowel symptoms

7) Gout – severe acute attacks of joint pain and swelling, in the big toe, the ankle, knee and elbow. This is caused due to deposition of uric acid crystals.

What causes arthritis?

Exact cause of the arthritis is not known.

1) Triggering agents, such as germs, which cause tuberculosis, pneumonia can affect the joints, causing arthritis.

2) Structural changes in the articular cartilage in the joints, usually those that are weight bearing, such as the spine and knees – main cause of osteoarthritis.

3) Deposition of uric acid in the joints.

4) Hereditary

5) Hormonal imbalance, physical or emotional stress causes rheumatoid arthritis.

6) If suffering from syphilis and gonorrhea, can be another possible cause for arthritis.

7) Climatic conditions such as cold and moisture can aggravate discomfort.

Symptoms:

Different types of arthritis have different symptoms. In general, arthritis is associated with pain and stiffness in the joints for atleast 3 days in a week over the last two months.

Some common symptoms include:

1) Mild swelling, pain and tenderness in the joints of the fingers, wrists, knees and feet.

2) Pain gets aggravated by any sort of movement in the joint.

3) Fever and stress

4) Anaemia

5) Weight loss

6) Joints feel red and warm.

7) Inflammation of the heart, lungs, eyes, nerves, blood vessels and lymph glands

Arthritis Treatment:

Unfortunately, there is no cure for arthritis. There are various treatment options, which help with managing pain and reducing deformity and disability. Early diagnosis is very important in getting arthritis under control.

Treatment options vary depending on the type of arthritis and include physical and occupational therapy, medications, Exercise of the joints is important in the case of arthritis, to help prevent the stiffness of muscles and joints.

There are several drugs that are used for the pain and inflammation of arthritis, but most of them are not very effective, because they cause lot of side effects. Side effects include gastrointestinal problems, such as, bleeding ulcers, stomach pain; which interfere with the synthesis of collagen, (fundamental for the formation of cartilage.

As a last resort, arthroplasty may be suggested. This, literally meaning “formation of joint” is an orthopadic surgical procedure, in which the arthritic or dysfunctional joint surface is replaced with something better.

Home remedies for arthritis:

* Intake of ample amounts of vitamin C in the form of citrus fruits, vegetables is a good home remedy for rheumatoid arthritis.

* Yoga is an effective ayurveda treatment to prevent and reduce joint stiffness, and increase their movement. This is useful in Arthritis pain relief

* Garlic contains anti-inflammatory properties, which is effective in the treatment of arthritis. Garlic may be taken raw or cooked.

* Lemon juice and a teaspoon of honey in a cup of warm water taken 2-3 times daily is effective for the treatment of arthritis. The citric acid found in lime is a solvent of uric acid which is the primary cause of some types of arthritis. This remedy is considered as effective Home Remedy For Arthritis

* Half teaspoon of turmeric powder taken with warm milk twice a day is beneficial in arthritis pain relief.

* Rubbing the aching joints with hot sesame oil before going to bed gives relief to the pain. Alternatively, warm coconut oil or mustard oil, mixed with two or three pieces of camphor should be massaged on stiff and aching joints. It will increase blood supply, and reduce inflammation and stiffness.

* Another herb known as Guggul is very helpful in curing arthritis. If available, eat half a teaspoon twice a day after meals with warm water.

* Raw potato juice therapy – Potatoes soaked in cold water – The water should be drunk in the morning on an empty stomach. Fresh juice can also be extracted from potatoes. This remedy is considered as useful Home Remedy For Arthritis
