12oct If I could only give you my spoons (World Arthritis day)

Of all medical problems massage is probably most renowned for helping back pain, stiff neck and shoulders, and general aches and pains. Although the aging process contributes to some of these problems, many can be avoided by simple lifestyle changes such as improving posture, taking more exercise, drinking more water, and eating more fresh fruit and vegetables.

Massage for backaches and pains

Back pain is one of the most commonly experienced problems, causing more days off work than any other physical symptom. Massage can help relax stiff muscles, locate and loosen areas of tension, and ease stress, which is often a factor in back pain. Helpful treatments for back pain, covered elsewhere in this book, include kneading, skin rolling, firm pressures, Chinese massage, Thai massage, shiatsu, and reflexology.

Massage for other aches and pains

Aches and pains become increasingly common with age, and for many elderly people the pain, swelling, and stiffness of arthritis and rheumatism is a sad fact of life. However, there is plenty of evidence that shows the benefits of regular massage in reducing pain and swelling, increasing mobility, reducing the need for painkillers, and improving mood. Some of the massage treatments suitable for aches and pains include hand and foot massage, manual lymphatic drainage, and hydrotherapy.

Self-help for aches and pain

For back pain, self-massage of the neck, shoulders, and lower back can work wonders. It will relieve pain and alleviate stress at the same time. Other self-help treatments include applying a hot or cold compress to the back, and reflexology: massage the instep to affect the back.

Never massage directly on an inflamed joint. Avoid any area that feels hot and swollen, instead massage very gently above the inflamed region.

Other measures

Aches and pains can be washed away in a relaxing bath. Try adding a few drops of rosemary, chemomile, or lavender essential oil to your bath and benefit from their soothing properties. Regular exercise, particularly swimming, is very important to maintain mobility.

Top 6 Risk Factors That Bring About Arthritis

27 Nov

Bob Hope, National Campaign Chairman

Having an arthritis attack can really dampen the mood of anyone. This condition is truly debilitating because performance of even the simplest tasks or activities, such as walking, climbing the stairs and even getting out of bed can be terribly painful. This is why it is not really surprising why some people even question their Creator for allowing them to suffer from this unbearable disease.

Figures show that almost 46 million adults, particularly those who are 65 and above, are suffering from some form of arthritis in the US. Experts have estimated that by 2030, adults with arthritis-related conditions will balloon to 67 million. With the above figures, you can’t help but wonder why there are so many Americans with this type of condition.

If you want to know if you will be part of the arthritis statistics in the future, read on and discover the top risk factors for developing this very painful disease:

Age

As you grow older, your risk of developing arthritis-related diseases, such as osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis increases. According to statistics, half of the people aged 65 and above in this country are suffering from this condition. In contrast, about one in 250 children is affected by some form of arthritis or rheumatism.

Genes

Whether you like it or not, you are at risk of developing this very painful disease if your parents and relatives also suffer from some form of arthritis. The good news is that scientists are now finding ways in which to determine particular gene sequences or variations that are causing the different types of arthritis. With this data, experts can make drugs and medications that can specifically target these arthritis-prone genetic sequences.

Gender

When it comes to certain types of arthritis, gender is definitely an issue. Statistics show that men are more susceptible to suffering from gout, while women are more predisposed to getting rheumatoid arthritis.

Smoking

Several studies have confirmed the direct link between smoking and arthritis. If you have parents or relatives that have this disease, it would be wise to stop smoking immediately because you are only increasing your risk of suffering from this debilitating condition if you don’t. In fact, a Swedish research has found out that smokers who carry an HLA gene, which is responsible for rheumatoid arthritis, increase their risks of getting the disease by 21%.

Profession

More and more studies are being conducted to find the connection between some forms of arthritis and occupation. Many believe that people who are exposed to nail polish, paint thinners, acetone, and pesticides are more prone to suffering from this disease. A recent Swedish study has found out that petroleum refiners and others who are exposed to or frequently use lubricating oils, motor oils, and other petroleum products are 30% more at risk of suffering from arthritis-related condition.

Diet

Being overweight and obese can make you prone to certain kinds of arthritis. However, there are also a significant number of thin individuals who are not spared from this disease. Thus, aside from your body weight, the foods that you eat or not eat play a significant role in determining whether you will have arthritic problems in the future.

Although experts cannot agree on what types of food can cause arthritis, they are sure that a diet full of saturated fat and lacking in antioxidants and vitamins could raise your risk of getting arthritis-related illnesses.

If you already are suffering from arthritis, you should know that there are many medications that can help you ease the pain that comes with your condition. There are also many websites and organizations that aim to help people deal with this disease. If you are not keen about taking synthetic drugs, you can also rely on alternative treatments and supplements. One product that you can use for arthritis is Phosoplex. Just visit www.Phosoplex.com to know more about this supplement.

Synvisc: Curing Knee Osteoarthritis

26 Nov

Synvisc: The Drug

Synvisc is a safe and effective medication in providing pain relief for up to six months in patients with knee osteoarthritis. This remedy is also proved beneficial in treating arthritis of the knee. It should be used only after non-drug treatment and simple medication. Synvisc is an injected synovial fluid, a naturally occurring substance in the joints that acts a lubricant and shock absorber on the joints. Decrease or absence of these lubricants may induce extreme pain and Osteoarthritis. In osteoarthritis, synovial fluid, becomes thinner and loses its ability to lubricate and cushion the knee joint. SYNVISC improves the cushioning and lubricating impacts of synovial fluid that has been damaged by osteoarthritis.

Synvisc: The ingredients

Synvisc (hylan G-F 20) is an elastoviscous fluid containing hylan polymers produced from chicken combs. Hylans are derivatives of hyaluronan (sodium hyaluronate), a natural complex sugar of the gly-cosaminoglycan family. Hyaluronan is a long-chain polymer containing repeating disaccharide units of Na-glucuronate-N-acetylglucosamine.

Synvisc: The Doses

Since Synvisc is an injection for the joint it should be taken on the recommendation of a medical expert. For osteoarthritis of the knee, the usual dose is 1 injection per week into the knee joint for a total of 3 weeks. If this first set of injections doesn’t provide enough relief, a second set of 3 weekly injections can be given provided at least 4 weeks have passed since the last treatment. The maximum recommended dose is 6 injections within 6 months.

Synvisc: The Side Effects

Synvisc may cause serious allergic reactions in patients who are very prone to allergies. These allergies include hives, swelling of lips and mouth and throat constriction. Other prominent side effects may be the temporary pain on the injected area and affected joint, rashes or burning sensations on the injected part of the skin, headache, and stomach related disturbances.

In some cases Calf cramps, dizziness, facial flushing with swelling of the lips, headache, itching of the skin and muscle pain are also reported due to Synvisc. These side effects are mild in nature and can be tolerated easily. The most common side effects are knee pain or swelling after injection, allergic reaction, difficult breathing, fever, fast heartbeat, muscle pain, itching at the injection area.

Synvisc: Not for every one

Synvisc must not be consumed by the patients or individuals who:

has fluid that doesn’t have the proper flow in the veins or lymphatic system of the leg to be injected

is allergic to any of the ingredients of the medication

has an infected or severely swollen joint

Arthritis Pain Relief – Avoid Arthritis Drugs – Change Your Diet

23 Nov

For more information on my designs please see my profile! :D

During my professional nursing career I was never able to find relief for my arthritis pain until I turned to the field of natural or alternative medicine. And arthritis sufferers today are continually seeking relief from their arthritis pain.

Arthritis concentrates in one or more joints where the deterioration occurs. Sometimes arthritis symptoms can occur in the wrist, elbows, shoulders, and jaw but you generally won’t find it there. In osteoarthritis, any one or more of the affected joints experience a progressive loss of cartilage. Cartilage is the slippery material that cushions the ends of bones.

Collagen is the essential protein found in cartilage. It forms a mesh to give support and flexibility to all the joints. Joints are designed for normal movement without pain. They are primarily supplied by the synovium and cartilage.

When chondrocytes (the cells that make up cartilage) age, they lose the ability to make repairs and produce more cartilage. This process may play an important part in the development and progression of osteoarthritis. Researchers report a higher incidence of osteoarthritis between parents and their children and between siblings rather than between husbands and wives. Some possible causes of arthritis include lesser known: bleeding disorders, like hemophilia, that cause bleeding to occur in the joints, disorders such as avascular necrosis, that block the blood supply closest to the joint and conditions like hemochromatosis, that cause iron build-up in the joints.

With natural arthritis treatments there will be fewer, if any, side effects or adverse reactions as with drugs or medications. Gluten may be one of the culprits in arthritic diseases which include fibromyalgia. So avoid wheat, barley, rye, spelt, triticale, kamut and oats (although oats is not a gluten grain it gets contaminated during the milling process at the wheat mills where it is usually milled). An acidic diet, that is a diet comprised of foods that are not alive, is considered to be inflammatory to the joints.

Taking a few dried Montmorency tart cherries seem to be helpful as a natural treatment for arthritis pain for many people. Some of the foods and beverages to avoid that are inflammatory are: caffeine, salt, sugar, meat, dairy products, additives like MSG and aspartame, preservatives, soft drinks, white flour, white rice, alcoholic beverages, fast food, processed vegetable oils, and refined, packaged and processed food. Studies that have been done on antioxidant vitamins question the value of them as supplements. It’s clearly better to consume these antioxidants in living foods because they may also need to work together with other nutrients present in the foods in order to work properly – synergistic action.

For a good natural approach and natural treatment for arthritis make an appointment with a naturopathic doctor, called a naturopath; ask around for referrals in your area. One natural treatment method restricts all inflammatory foods.

If your arthritis is affecting your weight-bearing joints, keeping your weight within a normal range is important to get rid of arthritis symptoms. The best natural approach is to eat foods that are known to help relieve arthritis pain or prevent arthritis, like living plant foods.

And did I mention how important it is to keep moving? Stretching and warming up the joints should always be the first step in your exercise routine to make your joints more flexible, but be careful in the early morning; you may need an hour or more of moving around first. You can start by moving your limbs around in bed a few minutes before you get out of bed. If you have swollen joints in your fingers, a good exercise to try is to put your finger tips together and press hard and release. Repeat several times. Exercise in a heated, unchlorinated pool if possible. It will help reduce the pressure on your joints and the heat will help loosen the joints.

Besides a predominately plant food diet, fight arthritis through plenty of movement and exercise. If you have pain and swelling in your fingers, try squeezing Thera-putty, which is putty designed for this purpose, or try exercising them with two of the Chinese chime balls. Exercise all your affected joints every day, to keep them as flexible as possible and help avoid them going stiff permanently.

For conventional treatment of arthritis – if you do choose to take drugs or medications, be very careful, read the labels carefully and talk to your pharmacist about side effects and adverse reactions. Make sure you know the name of your drugs and if they’ll react with any other medication you’re taking. Also if you’re going to take arthritis prescription medications make sure to ask your pharmacist for the drug inserts so you can read up on the drugs and understand any side effects or adverse reactions, before you start taking them. Only you know which arthritis treatment option is best for you.

Once you understand the facts about arthritis and the possible causes and treatment approaches you can take, you’ll be on your way to recovery and pain will disappear for good. Arthritis pain relief of your arthritis symptoms is the ultimate goal and understanding arthritis and arthritis treatments is a good way for you to get there. Knowing more about arthritis and osteoarthritis and how it works will ultimately help contribute to the relief of your arthritis pain.

... including a decorative frog for his collection.

What is Osteoarthritis?

It is a degenerative bone disease in which the joints of the human body deteriorate over time. From the Greek “osteo,” for bone, “arthro,” for joint and “itis,” for inflammation. The disorder in the bone causes the patient to endure pain, swelling of the joints, and their mobility is limited. That’s when osteoarthritis Pain Relief is sought for.

Both the cartilage and fluid that lubricate joints lessen causing bones to rub against each other with little to no cushion. This also when the patient feels the pain and when they are in pain, they prefer to be immobile.

The changing joint may begin to grow “bone spurs” to recompense for the deteriorating bone, but this actually further increases the pain in the joint. Osteoarthritis is the most usual form of arthritis. This article will list the methods of providing osteoarthritis pain relief.

Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

Chronic pain, swelling of the joints, stiffness, tingling of extremities, skin redness around affected areas, and joints that fill with fluid are all symptoms of osteoarthritis. Joints feel more hurtful and swollen for the entirely day and humid weather wont help because it actually increases the pain in many osteoarthritis sufferers.

Targeted affected areas

Most commonly the hands, feet, spine, hips, and knees are targeted by the disease but regrettably any of the joints can be affected.

How to diagnose osteoarthritis

Damage to bones, joint space, and evidence of bone spur formation can be diagnosed through x-rays. MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) can also show damage to joints. Though many arthritis suffers may have negative x-rays, they still get an arthritis diagnosis due to having all the other symptoms of arthritis.

A Cure for osteoarthritis?

There is no known cure for arthritis and in severe cases osteoarthritis can become a debilitating disease. However, there are several methods by which to manage the disease and provide lasting osteoarthritis pain relief.

1)One tool that can result in is exercise to osteoarthritis pain relief. Strengthening muscles through exercises like yoga and Pilates can help to aid joints and help arthritis patient maintain flexibility where if not treated can cause stiffness in the bone.

2)Heat therapy is another method Osteoarthritis Pain Relief. By the application of a heating pad or patch can help ease pain.

3)Topical aspirin or analgesic creams can also relieve pain while relieving skin around swelled joints.

4)Tylenol, Aleve, Motrin, or Advil are a fourth way to manage arthritis pain. They are over-the-counter pain relievers.

5)Prescription medications such as Celebrex and herbal remedies such as glucosamine also support joint health.

6)Traditional methods of choosing osteoarthritis pain relief may not work for all arthritis sufferers. One may have to changes their lifestyles, such as warming up before performing certain activities, resting frequently during the activities, or avoiding certain activities totally may be necessary.

7)This will be a more drastic change, that is by moving to a warmer and drier client. This sometimes helps.

8) Last but not least, non-traditional treatments such as acupuncture, massage, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and treatment with holistic supplements have been successful for some sufferers in to obtaining ongoing osteoarthritis pain relief.

In the end it is your choice that matters, because only you who knows which methods work best for you.

Breakthrough in Treatment for Knee Osteoarthritis

19 Nov

There has been a promising outcome based on a study using home-based neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) to enhance quadriceps fitness in older people suffering from Osteoarthritis of the knee.

Symptoms of this wear-and-tear arthritis can be alleviated by strengthening the muscle around the affected joint or joints. Exercise is known to lessen the symptoms, severity and impairment resulting from this disease. In some cases where sufferers are normally sedentary, exercise may result in muscle damage, particularly in women.

The NMES Study

Laura Talbot of The Johns Hopkins University engineered the study using neuromuscular electrical stimulation as another method of treatment for Osteoarthritis of the knee.
This process is undertaken by spurring small electrical currents through the skin, allowing them to travel to the nerves and muscles to enable involuntary muscle contraction. A total of 34 adults diagnosed radiographically (through x-rays) to have Osteoarthritis of the knee participated in the study.
The 34 participants were randomly chosen to undergo a 12-week Arthritis Self-Management Course on standard arthritis education, with or without NMES. The group subjected to NMES was provided with portable electrical muscle stimulators to be used 3 days a week to train and strengthen their quadriceps. Over a 12-week period, the isometric contractions were amplified by increments of 30 to 40% of the maximum.

The main outcome was isometric quadriceps femoris (QF) torque. Secondary outcomes included:
->daily step counts
->total activity vector magnitude
->100-foot walk-turn-walk
->timed stair climb
->chair rise
->pain level

The results point towards:
->An increase of 9.1% in 120 degree QF peak torque with the use of the stimulated-knee extensor contrasting with a 7% loss in the education only group.
->Timed chair rise was cut by 11% in the NMES group, while the education only group showed a mere 7% decrease.
->Both groups exhibited a 7% faster walk time
->Pain levels in both groups remained the same despite intervention.
Researchers of this study came to the conclusion that applying the home-based NMES treatment method may hold some promise in enhancing quadriceps strength among adult sufferers of Osteoarthritis of the knee, without worsening arthritic symptoms.

Arthritis Pain Relief : Questions To Ask Your Healthcare Pro

18 Nov

who knew

Copyright 2005 Priya Shah

A great place to begin taking charge of you arthritis pain relief and prevention planning is by making an appointment with your healthcare provider and finding out more about your condition and treatment options.

Make sure to jot down questions ahead of time, and take them along in your journal or notebook, armed with a pencil to fill in his or her replies.

Some questions to begin with may be centered around these:

1. Do I have a form of arthritis? If not, what is wrong & what do I do next?

2. If so, which type is it? And what can I expect short-term and long-term?

3. What pain relief treatments are available? Which have side affects & what are they?

4. What self-care solutions do you advise?

5. Are there any limitations I should know about; i.e. special dietary issues, special activities to avoid, any OTC meds to NOT mix, etc.?

6. What resources do you have to help with my diet and exercise planning?

7. What other arthritic and other health resources do you have for my family and me?

When you take in your questions, also take in a description of your symptoms so that your doctor can help better understand your situation and health.

Make sure to note:

- Where you have pain (same joint both limbs?)

- When you feel pain – with certain activities, in the morning, when it rains, etc.

- How long you have had the pain

- If the pain increases or decreases, comes and goes, etc.

- The type & intensity level of pain – stabbing, dull, cramping, stiffness – and low, mild or high pain

- Note any limitations – can’t bend over too far without pain, can’t get out of car, etc.

- Share any family history of arthritis

- Tell about any OTC or prescription medications or other treatments you currently take or use.

- Discuss any special diet you are on and exercise programs

So try the different options available for arthritis pain relief and prevention.

Give your joints a break as soon as possible from any excess weight they’re hauling around, even if it’s the weight of excess stress.

Lighten up and make pain relief and prevention care part of your normal, everyday routine.

Arthritis Pain Relief Through Herbal Treatments

18 Nov

Day 5/365 - My Salvation

Arthritis is easily among the most common of the geriatric problems faced by people over the world today. It is characterized by mild to severe pains in the various joints of the bones, especially in the joints of the hands, legs and the back. Arthritic pains are felt more acutely in the fingers. It makes the joints swollen, and if not treated in time, the joints may become permanently deformed.

Ayurveda does not treat arthritic pains as superficial joint pains. The root cause of arthritis is the buildup of poisonous substances in the body due to faulty digestive processes. These substances that build up in the body are known collectively as ama. In order to treat the arthritis, the first step should be to remove the ama. Only then can other treatment approaches be applied.

Instead of living with arthritic pains and making life worse, you should make use of the several simple herbal remedies that Ayurveda has developed for the treatment of this condition.

Treatment with Simple Home Remedies

Remedy 1

Take two to four tablespoonfuls of castor oil per day. This will help to flush out the toxins collected in the areas of the joints. Also have a cup of strong ginger tea each morning. This keeps the digestive system quite efficient and brings about a drastic reduction in the severity of joint pains.

Remedy 2

Crush two to three cloves of garlic and add it to a glass of diluted milk. Boil this to one fourth of its original amount. Cool it down and drink it just before bedtime each night.

Remedy 3

If you simply fast for one complete day, or stick to a liquid diet (not milk or its products), then it will also help in removing the toxins from the body. This will bring an immense relief to the arthritic pains. You can also go on a total banana diet. Eat about eight to ten bananas each day and nothing else; keep up this diet for three to four days. Bananas have all the important minerals bones need, including calcium, potassium and phosphorus.

Remedy 4

In a cup of warm water, put two teaspoons of lemon juice and one teaspoon of honey. Have this twice a day. It will reduce the severity of arthritic pains.

Remedy 5

Every morning when you wake up, have two cloves of garlic before even brushing your teeth. If you cannot tolerate the pungent taste of the clove, then you can roast them in castor oil till they are golden in color. Apart from reducing the arthritic pains, this is also a very effective remedy in treating cardiovascular problems, and it can actually keep heart attacks at bay.

Remedy 6

Mix some turmeric powder in a cup of warm water. Dissolve it and then drink it when still a bit warm. This will reduce the severity of the arthritic pains.

Remedy 7

Extract the juice of one raw potato. Drink this juice every morning on an empty stomach. This is believed to reduce the acute pains of arthritis.

Remedy 8

Prepare a soup using one green leafy vegetable, carrots, celery and beetroots. Mix all these individual soups in equal proportions to make one bowl. Have this soup once daily. You will get all the necessary minerals required for the bones.

Remedy 9

Warm some coconut oil and put a few pieces of camphor in it. Use this oil to massage on the aching joints. You will find tremendous and quick relief in the arthritic pains.

Remedy 10

Prepare some alfalfa tea and drink it regularly. Twice a day is the best bet. Your arthritic pains will show reduction from day one.

Remedy 11

Sandalwood is a good cooling herb to allay arthritic pains. Prepare a paste of sandalwood with minimum amount of water. Apply this paste thoroughly on the affected joints. You will find good relief in the acuteness of the pains.

Treatment with Special Ayurvedic Methods

Several herbs are made use of in the Ayurvedic treatment of arthritis. But the most important of them is certainly the guggul (Commiphora wightii, Mukul Myrrh Tree). Guggul is taken in the form of its combinations such as Yogaraja Guggulu and Mahayogaraja Guggulu. These preparations contain guggul with several other herbs and minerals in order to be effective in the treatment of arthritic pains. Triphala Guggulu is also very commonly prescribed. Triphala Guggulu is a very beneficial preparation which contains both the Triphala and the Guggulu components. In case the arthritic pains reach a peak limit, Simhanada Guggulu is prescribed.

If the arthritis is beginning to spread to the spinal column then guggul is no longer that effective. Hence another herb is introduced, with is the Brihadvata Chintamani. This is taken in the quantities of one-fourth gram thrice or four times a day, depending on how severe the pains are.

Arthritis And Allergy

07 Nov

Marilyn Monroe

Many doctors have refused to accept that both arthritis and rheumatism, are either caused, or at the very least seriously affected, by diet. Most people over the age of thirty, will notice a twinge or an ache somewhere, if they persist in eating something that is bad for them. In actual fact, both rheumatism and arthritis are classic examples of masked food allergies at their rampaging worst. There is a mass of evidence throughout the world to support this fact.

One example, in many, is research done during a three and a half year clinical trial, conducted by Dr D.M. Carroll of North Carolina. In 300 patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, 98 per cent were found to be severly allergic to different foods, and some to several foods. The analysis showed 37 per cent allergic to wheat, 27 per cent to corn, 23 per cent to milk, 19 per cent to eggs and 12 per cent to tomatoes. Once the offending foods were removed from their diets, they all showed marked improvement. That is very conclusive evidence in one study.

The influence of arthritis on our society is significant. In 1981, according to the Bureau of Statistics, it was responsible for 25 per cent more lost work time than industrial disputes. It is known to affect 1,250,000 Australians, many of them children. Common sense must eventually dictate that the diet and environment of these people, should be thoroughly examined for food and chemical intolerances.

At present the most widespread medical treatment for arthritis is the administration of large daily doses of aspirin, over a prolonged period. Aspirin is made up of acetylsalicylic acid which is a salicylate derivative. It is well documented that salicylates are a potent allergen, affecting many people. Could this not then be a case of masking the disease with the very substance which is causing it?

There is virtually no part of the body which may not be affected, either directly or indirectly, by an allergic reaction – particularly with respect to food and chemical intolerances. It is important to understand that the effects of an ongoing allergic condition, on the body, can ultimately be catastrophic, by virtue of the cumulative effects over months or years. These effects certainly go much further than the general, discomforting symptoms discussed in previous chapters and can lead to serious degeneration and disease in major organs if allowed to persist undetected.

Unfortunately, few doctors understand that allergy illness affects the body as a whole. This problem is well described in a passage from the Complete Book of Homeopathy by Michael Weiner and Kathleen Goss.

Yet perhaps the most destructive effect of modern orthodox medicine lies in the changes that have taken place between physician and patient… The general practitioner (in the traditional sense) is almost a thing of the past, and each specialist treats only that organ system that comes within his area of expertise. No wonder we feel that our doctors are not really looking at us as whole beings. Common sense tells us that many symptoms appearing in different organs systems may be related – that they at least constitute a whole picture of our state of health. Yet our trips to the doctor’s office must often result in a sense of frustration when we feel that the specific organ-directed treatment we receive is not based upon the doctor’s assessment of our entire symptom picture.
